I can't tell you which moment was the best for me this weekend as they all rank right up there. It could be catching the longest surfski wave in the world at Cape Recife in PE; it could also be winning the 2 star World Series event the next day. Another contender will surely be the paddle in and out through the Keurboom River Mouth during the Plett Easter Challenge, but it may be ruled out as my hard paddled for lead was all but diminished because of these waves. Then there is also the paddle around the point at Nature's Valley across the Salt River mouth for the SA Double Ski Champs on Sunday; quite probably one of the most spectacular beach entries you could ever do. The sprint races we had in PE after the main event were also really fun and exciting, but are slightly dwarfed by the training session I did with the locals at Plett Central around "the Blinders" in big seas....heart in throat stuff with a bunch of really good people who are just too keen on paddling to describe in one sentence. The evenings spent with the Fenn Family in East London (after doing the Nahoon Dice); or with the Von Wildemann family in PE; or the Eray family were some of the best I can remember. They are all fantastic people who all absolutely personify hospitality; each evening spent was a night to remember. An absolute standout of a memory is Team Surfskischool - Me, Adam, Tom, Wanda and Barry (from Durban) - racing the all races (except Tom who caught hectic flu) and taking a joint clinic on Plett Central beach, as well as hanging out at the different venues and then dressing up for Michele Eray's 30th. These moments are but to name a few of the standouts in my mind. Can you see why it is difficult to pick a favourite one?
A road trip always seems to find fond memories for me, so naturally it was with great excitement and anticipation that Nix and I set out up South Africa's East Coast for a long weekend of surfski action. It was a great weekend which will go down in my book under the chapter: "Legendary Road Trips."
